Until about 1850, Chihuahuas were obsolete, until these tiny dogs were discovered near Mesoamerican ruins, near Chihuahua, Mexico. In 1904, they were first recognized by the American Kennel Club. In the 1930-40’s, “Rumba King” Xavier Cugat, appeared in movies and television shows with Chihuahuas, which made them more popular.
In 1964, they became the 3rd most popular breed in the USA. Today, it is still a very popular breed, with an average of 40,000 being registered every year with the AKC.
Is there any part of their history that I missed? Please leave extra facts in the comments.
